AGRI-TREND® Agrology is pleased to welcome: Christopher Dufault as AGRI-TREND® Senior Agri-Coach® based Ottawa, ON to our growing network!
Christopher, who was raised near Waterloo, Ontario, has been an entomologist since his youth. This early enthusiasm inevitably led to his studying biology (BSc, Waterloo) and applied agricultural entomology (MSc, Guelph; PhD, Cambridge). He has worked as editor of The Grower newspaper, and in the agricultural chemical industry in sales, field and market research, and the registration of pesticides. Now a resident of Ottawa, Christopher retired in 2012 from the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) of the federal government where he worked in various aspects of pesticide regulation for 20 years. He started out in government preparing assessments of the environmental chemistry and fate and non-target effects of pesticides, followed by insecticide efficacy assessments, and finally, in his last 10 years at the PMRA, established and headed a section that was responsible for assessment of the value of pesticides under re-evaluation. Christopher's PhD research included monitoring both pest and non-target insects, and focused particularly on identifying factors that influence the efficacy of insecticides such as weather, and placement of residues in the crop. He is especially interested in the interplay between insect behaviour, stage-specific susceptibility to insecticides, and the behaviour of insecticide residues on the crop foliage and in the soil below it. He believes a good understanding of these factors can help target insecticide application more precisely with the goal of achieving the best possible level of control of an insect pest, or reducing the amount of insecticide applied, or both. Christopher is Principal at Christopher P. Dufault & Associates Inc. He is a director on the board of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists, and a long-standing member of the Entomological Societies of Ontario, Canada and America.
